7 Tips to help Employees Adapt to an Organization’s Culture

Instilling focus, discipline, and accountability throughout the company is essential to ensure that everyone executes on the organization’s vision every day. It requires a concentrated effort from leadership to create a culture of accountability and establish clear expectations for everyone in the organization. 

Brene Brown is a well-known researcher, author, and speaker who has studied topics such as vulnerability, courage, and leadership.

In her book “Dare to Lead,” Brown emphasizes the importance of setting clear expectations and boundaries for individuals and teams. She suggests that leaders must be clear about what they expect from their employees and create a culture where people feel comfortable asking for help when they need it. Brown also stresses the importance of giving and receiving feedback in a way that is constructive and respectful. 

Brown also speaks about the importance of vulnerability in leadership. She suggests that leaders who are willing to be vulnerable and admit their own mistakes can create a culture of accountability where people feel safe to take risks and make mistakes. It also demonstrates a heart of humility. As a parent, I admit that I have made some mistakes throughout my journey, but I take pride in the fact that I consistently take responsibility for my mistakes and actively seek forgiveness from my children when I’ve screwed up. 

How to help Employees Adapt:

Having a great company culture doesn’t start with free lunches, company swag, or parties. A great company culture is one where leaders are good stewards of the talent in their charge. The employee that takes into consideration the employee and leader expectations, the company must have accountability, discipline, and be laser focused. Accountability is a virtue in the workplace that can shape company culture and has a direct impact on the success of the company and its employees. Heck, given the number of hours we spend together working, it could have a direct impact on the world we live in.

The role of leadership in shaping culture is critical to the company’s success and employee integration and retention. It’s much easier for an employee to grasp the company’s vision and execute their role when the company can stay consistent with their culture using these steps. Consistency is the key word here.  We can’t tell you the number of agencies we’ve collaborated with where, prior to the involvement of KF Strategies, our discovery revealed a significant lack of trust among the staff towards their leadership team. These individuals expressed the challenges they faced in aligning themselves with the team’s objectives, as the leadership seemed indecisive and inconsistent, much like the unpredictability of the wind. 

As the saying goes, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.” This analogy accurately captures the impact of wishy-washy leadership on decision-making and overall direction.

Here are some ways to instill focus, discipline, and accountability throughout the company:

  2. Set clear expectations: Leaders should set clear expectations for employees in terms of goals, objectives, and performance metrics. This creates a sense of accountability and ensures that everyone is working towards the same goals.
  3. Be Consistent! Use performance metrics to track progress: Leaders should use performance metrics to track progress towards achieving the organization’s goals. This helps to identify areas where improvement is needed and provides a basis for recognition and reward for those who perform well.
  4. Provide regular feedback: Regular feedback is critical for ensuring that employees understand how their work contributes to the organization’s goals. Leaders should provide constructive feedback regularly to ensure that employees stay focused and motivated.
  5. Implement a performance management system: A performance management system provides a structured approach to setting goals, tracking progress, and providing feedback. This ensures that everyone in the organization is held accountable for their performance.
  6. Create a culture of accountability: Leaders should create a culture of accountability by recognizing and rewarding employees who meet or exceed performance expectations. This encourages everyone in the organization to stay focused and motivated to achieve the organization’s goals.
  7. Hold regular team meetings: Regular team meetings provide an opportunity for everyone to discuss progress, identify challenges, and brainstorm solutions. This helps to keep everyone focused and motivated and ensures that everyone is working towards the same goals.

While terms like “accountability” and “setting clear expectations” may initially appear intimidating, the reality is that we already practice these principles in our daily lives.
